A "jazz heavy opus" driven by a pummelling hypnotic drumbeat and a groovy bass synth, a foundation of sparse piano chords in which skat style baritone vocals are spat out over the top and coloured with Miles Davis circa 'Sketches of Spain' jazz trumpet.

Johnny had a lust for life, a libertine so full of fight, he left behind all that he loved and learnt
Ceaselessly he steered right through all obstacles, the devils tool, passing all the places that he knew
Made it through the long cold nights, made it through those bar room fights, made it through the valley of fear
Johnny braced the wheel real tight, kept the sinking sun in sight and headed for the city of gold

Entering the city night without a dime, without a light, breathing in the sweet sweet smell of all the possibilities
Gilded streets that paved the way for hopes and dreams that fade away of casualties kicked out onto the curb
Sunk all his money on a dive, a junkie’s mattress, no sunlight, but he made it to the city of gold
Peasants live where kings all fear but kings were made from sweat and tears and Johnny had kept one eye on the crown

Hold on to your dreams you’re falling, the city of gold is calling
God only knows, the things that we’ve been through

Working through those long dog days, still nothing seemed to go his way, an atheist left praying on his knees
The mighty fell with such a howl, the dust kept kicking up for hours, his pride still swings from that old hanging tree
Blame it on the rainy days, blame it on the friends you made, blame it all on anyone else
But Johnny knew deep down its true that bleeding hearts aren’t listened to and slowly picked himself up off the floor.
