Sunk all his money on a dive, a junkie’s mattress, no sunlight, but he made it to the city of gold
Peasants live where kings all fear but kings were made from sweat and tears and Johnny had kept one eye on the crown

God only knows, the things that we’ve been through
Working through those long dog days, still nothing seemed to go his way, an atheist left praying on his knees
The mighty fell with such a howl, the dust kept kicking up for hours, his pride still swings from that old hanging tree

But Johnny knew deep down its true that bleeding hearts aren’t listened to and slowly picked himself up off the floor.
